Tanzania Bora Initiative (TBI) is a member organisation of the East and Horn of Africa Observers Network (E-HORN). Inspired by the vision of an engaged, accountable, and responsible society — where every citizen has both a role and a responsibility — TBI takes its name from the Kiswahili word “Bora”, meaning “better”. It reflects the aspiration for a better and democratic Tanzania.
TBI brings a decade of experience in national campaigns on civic and electoral engagement. Drawing on lessons from 2020 and in response to Tanzania’s current shrinking civic space and the systemic marginalisation of youth, women, and persons with disabilities, TBI is committed to breaking down barriers to civic participation and engagement.
With support from AHEAD Africa, TBI will join three other organisations from the Uchaguzi Coalition Tanzania to promote integrity in the country’s 2025 elections. The Research and Education for Democracy in Tanzania (REDET) will lead a study to assess political awareness and engagement, shaping the messaging of TBI’s nationwide creative civic engagement campaign (which will use music, performances, and televised content), and guiding the content of Youth Partnership Countrywide (YPC)’s civic and voter education programmes. The study’s findings will also inform the Centre for Strategic Litigation (CSL)’s post-electoral legal advocacy priorities, focusing on the National Elections Act and the Political Parties Act.

Under curfews and internet shutdowns, the election served the powerful, not the people.
