Bareedo Platform

  • Story

Bareedo Platform is a youth-led NGO in Somalia, founded in 2015 to promote inclusive democracy. It empowers citizens — especially women, youth, minorities, and displaced people — to participate in public decisions and shape policies that affect their communities.

Bareedo has strengthened participatory democracy by running civic education workshops for youth on elections, governance, and citizens’ rights, publishing civic reports, tracking public debates, and using digital channels to amplify community voices — all while promoting digital rights to ensure Somalis can safely access and share information online.

With support from Africtivistes, as part of the Digitalise Youth and AHEAD Africa projects, and powered by the Digital Democracy Initiative, Bareedo is launching a nine-month civic tech project to engage Somali youth in elections. A multilingual digital platform will provide civic education, electoral information, and incident reporting, while 100 trained youth ambassadors — 60 % women — lead outreach to over 20 000 young people, fostering inclusion, transparency, and trust in democratic processes.
