The 2024 elections were a defining moment for democracy, with voters in over 70 countries heading to the polls. Many incumbents faced defeat, largely due to economic concerns. In Southern Africa, elections took place in six countries: South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Madagascar, Mauritius and Botswana. These elections were observed by several election observer missions highlighting key successes and challenges.

To reflect on 2024 elections’ successes and challenges and improve future electoral processes by developing an advocacy strategy for implementing election recommendations, the Electoral Support Network of Southern Africa (ESN-SA) will host a two-day Election Academy on 24-25 April in South Africa. The event will bring together regional bodies, civil society, and development partners to analyze election outcomes, develop an advocacy strategy, and enhance collaboration.

With elections in Malawi, Seychelles, and Tanzania in 2025, the Academy will also help shape preparations for upcoming polls.
