
{"id":13046,"date":"2026-06-16T13:36:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T13:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ahead.africa\/?p=13046"},"modified":"2026-06-20T08:20:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T08:20:49","slug":"the-clock-is-ticking-for-south-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ahead.africa\/en\/the-clock-is-ticking-for-south-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"The clock is ticking for South Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Sudan is preparing for its first-ever post-independence elections, scheduled for <strong>22 December 2026<\/strong>, but questions about the country\u2019s electoral readiness remain pressing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-link-color wp-elements-4e26aadf87ffe478e94e73e5d1ff62a1 wp-block-paragraph\">A new assessment by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ahead.africa\/en\/grantee\/standard-action-liaison-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Standard Action Liaison Force (SALF)<\/a>, conducted under the AHEAD Africa project, examines the state of preparedness through three lenses: citizen engagement, the legal framework, and the capacity of electoral institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drawing on surveys, interviews, focus groups, and legal analysis across six states and one administrative area, the study finds <strong>strong public interest <\/strong>in democratic participation despite years of delays and uncertainty. At the same time, it highlights <strong>major challenges<\/strong>, including gaps in electoral legislation, limited institutional capacity, delays in voter registration, insufficient civic education, and unresolved provisions of the peace agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings point to both opportunity and risk. While South Sudanese citizens are eager to shape their country\u2019s future through the ballot box, ensuring credible and inclusive elections will require urgent efforts.
